I use a 1TB (which is the equivalent of 1000GB) external hard drive. I have it set up through the windows 7 system to back up automatically once a week. I figure a weeks worth of lost data at most is the most I could handle, depending on your usage backing up monthly for a light user might be fine or for a heavy user with lots of important documents every day might be a better option. The initial backup will take longer than the future backups since the computer has to send the whole hard drive worth of data to the external drive. After the initial backup it can take as little as 1 minute to back up since the program will look for new files or changed files and just update the changes.

Also flash drives have a limited life span, you can only use them so many times before the memory craps out.

While you'll spend a little more on an external hard drive it will serve you much better and having it connected to your computer at all times will allow you to set up a automatic back-up and forget it until FRED completely dies and you need to get the data on a new machine!

Another great way to back-up your computer is to use http://www.carbonite.com/ for around $50 a year you can back-up unlimited data. This is great for if a fire burns down your house or a flood ruins everything, since the back-up information is stored outside your home it can easily be recovered without worry. Whereas if you back-up to a hard drive or flash drive or even CD-Rs if the house is ruined so are the back-ups. I personally use carbonite.com to do my off site back-ups. It all runs through the Internet.
